ICA helped the socially-motivated owner of this sole proprietorship convert to a cooperative business structure. The company is located in Gallatin Gateway, Montana and has 50 worker-owners. Chroma Technology CorporationChroma is a designer and manufacturer of optical filters and coating for fluorescent microscopes used in biomedical research, aerospace, communications, commercial electronics and defense applications. Chroma’s ownership structure is not purely cooperative, and was specially designed to give the company’s founders a majority share while also giving employees a direct stake in the company’s governance and financial performance. ICA worked with the founders to prepare a business plan, assemble start-up capital and develop an ownership structure that satisfied their goal to form a business entity that would be democratic and equitable. It is in Brattleboro, Vermont and has 45 worker-owners. www.chroma.com Cooperative Home Care Associates (CHCA)CHCA is a home health care agency in South Bronx, New York City. ICA worked with CHCA’s founder and the Community Service Society, a private New York social services agency, to develop a new business cooperative. ICA prepared the business plan, raised start-up capital, provided debt financing through its lending affiliate LEAF, and provided Board guidance during the cooperative’s early years of operation. ICA assisted a group of six workers who were laid off when their mountain bike company was sold, and who wanted to form a cooperative business to make high-end bicycle frames. ICA conducted the feasibility study, prepared the business plan and provided debt financing for expansion through its affiliate loan fund, LEAF. South Mountain is a resource-conscious architectural design and construction company on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. As with Big Timberworks, ICA helped the sole owner of this company convert to a cooperative business structure as a way to extend the responsibilities and rewards of ownership to a growing workforce.
